Capacity Building
Earlier I mentioned the framework of the Three Buckets of Leadership: Character, Capacity, and Competency. Capacity building is an intentional initiative to contribute to the leadership development of high potential employees. The idea of “capacity” implies that people may have different levels of leadership capacity. As a result, the leadership development plan is determined by the level an individual has the potential to achieve. Can most people lead at some level? Yes! Does everyone have the same capacity for senior leadership? No! This comment is not intended to be judgemental at any level of a leadership capacity matrix. It simply recognizes the reality that some people are well-suited for the complexities that go with senior leadership responsibilities while others may be more often suited to a followership role. Insight from various assessments like the MBTI and the StrengthsFinder as well as specific leadership assessments can provide clues as to one’s capacity for leadership. All levels of leadership require intentional development plans to help individuals maximize their unique leadership capacity. But there must be intentionality in a company’s leadership development initiative to understand what is needed for each level in the matrix.
